Repositioning sustainability reporting from compliance document to strategic brand communication system

Role: Lead Designer & Visual Strategy Partner
Deliverables: 120+ Page Report, Visual System, Social Media Toolkit
Audience: Investors, leadership teams, sustainability partners, external stakeholders

The problem

  • Previous corporate responsibility reports were dense, compliance-focused, and difficult to navigate
  • Sustainability progress was under-communicated visually, limiting stakeholder engagement
  • Marketing lacked modular assets to repurpose report content for digital channels
  • Brand identity was inconsistently applied across long-form publications

Constraints

Stakeholder & Approval Complexity

  • Required approval from 6 AFL internal stakeholders and 2 external sustainability consultants (NextGen)
  • Managed overlapping feedback across marketing, leadership, and consulting teams
  • Navigated iterative review cycles with cross-functional priorities

Data & Content Challenges

  • Report content delivered in dense Word documents and unformatted Excel spreadsheets
  • Required restructuring, hierarchy creation, and data visualization clarity
  • Incorporated significant last-minute sustainability data revisions prior to publication

Photography & Visual Assets

  • Limited access to professional sustainability photography
  • Retouched and color-corrected stock imagery to align with brand tone
  • Directed non-creative AFL staff on in-office photography, providing creative guidance to produce usable visual assets

Brand Limitations

  • Existing AFL green overpowered large-format layouts. Proposed and secured approval to subtly shift the green toward a cooler blue-green for improved readability
  • Maintained brand integrity while elevating visual sophistication

Client brand guidelines & existing material

I began by auditing AFL’s existing report designs to understand their established visual language and identify opportunities for refinement. In parallel, I partnered with stakeholders to clarify the desired creative direction and strategic goals for the new report. I curated a focused set of internal assets and external inspiration to facilitate a collaborative discussion, aligning on visual preferences, priorities, and areas to evolve—ensuring the final direction both honored the brand and elevated it.

Colors & texture

I developed a curated visual exploration of nature photography that aligned closely with the existing brand color palette, identifying imagery that could function as cohesive design elements within the report system. This approach ensured the visuals felt intentional and brand-integrated rather than decorative, reinforcing consistency while adding depth and dimension to the overall layout.

Inspiration & refences

This approach introduces texture, evoking a tangible sense of physical sustainability. It bridges the gap between abstract data and real-world applications, illustrating how materials and energy are conserved or reused. The design effectively translates the raw data from the Excel sheets into a more relatable and concrete context, emphasizing the practical impact of sustainability efforts. By incorporating these elements, the direction not only enhances visual interest but also reinforces the narrative of resourcefulness and environmental responsibility.

3 Creative Directions

I developed three distinct creative directions, each with its own visual language, layout system, and approach to hierarchy. The third direction was a more exploratory concept, where I was given the freedom to push the creative boundaries while still aligning with brand guidelines.

In collaboration with the AFL and NextGen ESG teams, we evaluated each direction against strategic goals and stakeholder needs. The team ultimately selected the third concept as the foundation and thoughtfully integrated select elements from the other directions—resulting in a refined, hybrid system that balanced innovation with brand consistency.

“Angie is a stellar partner on graphic design projects. Her creativity is top notch, and she provides reasoning for different visualizations to help her clients consider what is best suited for their needs. Along with her professionalism, flexibility, and responsiveness, the past two years of collaboration on AFL’s Corporate Responsibility Report has resulted in a trusting working relationship. Angie created a cohesive design for the reports that provides visual structure, highlights key information for easier reading, and differentiates the reporting years. She’s been a vital member of a team that has been proud of the end result! This collaboration has led me to recommend her without hesitancy to several other clients who need design support.”

The layered circles symbolize the wires encircling the barrels as seen in a factory setting. They are also a visual representation of AFL’s products, a reference to the “connection” that AFL’s products enable.

Angie has been an incredible partner in transforming AFL’s Corporate Responsibility Report and messaging over the past couple years. She brings fresh, creative ideas that help tell AFL’s sustainability story in a way that highlights our unique story, our people and our values of customer focus and community engagement. She has a talent for turning metrics and content that could easily feel dry into clear, engaging visuals and messaging. Her work has helped us share our progress and commitments in a way that really resonates. I’m grateful for her support and strongly recommend her to anyone looking for a designer who can bring corporate responsibility storytelling to life.

Driving Higher LinkedIn Engagement Through Strategic Content Repurposing

Beyond the report itself, I partnered closely with the AFL marketing team to extend the value of the design system into social media. Together, we identified priority data points to highlight on the company’s LinkedIn page and repurposed key report visuals into platform-optimized, data-forward graphics.
